The Best Green Spaces for a Day Out in North London

London is one of Europe’s most exciting cities. It also happens to be blessed with several fantastic parks and green areas, which are perfect for city-dwellers in need of natural surroundings after a week at work.

If you’re thinking of moving to North London, you’ll be pleased to know that there are some great green spaces here. Many have a wide range of activities and amenities on offer, making them the perfect spot to enjoy a day out. Here’s more information.

The best parks in North London

    Finsbury Park

Situated north of Holloway, Finsbury Park is a firm favourite among residents of all ages. It officially opened in 1869, though by the later part of the 20th century, had fallen into disrepair. Thankfully, a Heritage Lottery Fund meant that the park could be regenerated, and in 2003, the lake was cleaned, and a new playground and café was built.

There are plenty of other things to do in Finsbury Park too. For example, there’s a skatepark, several football pitches, tennis courts, basketball courts and the Parkland Walk, which is popular with joggers and dog-walkers. The formal gardens are perfect for having a picnic, and the arboretum is pleasant to stroll around.

    Hampstead Heath

Hampstead Heath is one of North London’s most famous green spaces. Its history dates back even further than Finsbury Park’s – in fact, it was first officially mentioned in historic texts dating from 1543. Although parts of the land were sold off in the past, it remains an enormous area, covering 790 acres in total.

There’s so much to do in Hampstead Heath. Runners enjoy taking part in the weekly Parkrun, and there are three natural pools to swim in. There are also several sports facilities, including a volleyball court and an athletics pitch. Families with kids will be happy to know that there are eight children’s play areas, plus several cafes and restaurants in and around the area.

    Regent’s Park

Designed by John Nash, the Regent’s Park is one of London’s Royal Parks. Much of the 410-acre space is devoted to open parkland, with plenty of space for kids to run around in. There are also some beautiful formal gardens, a bandstand and a lake.

One of Regent’s Park key attractions is London Zoo, which draws in visitors from around the world. Events are also often held in the park, and there’s a boating area, plenty of playgrounds and numerous sports pitches too.

    Highbury Fields

Highbury Fields is Islington’s largest park, and has a wealth of activities for people of all ages to enjoy. Although it’s smaller than some of the other green spaces, there’s a lot packed into this area, such as Highbury Pool and Fitness Centre, a bandstand and a children’s playground.

There’s also a water-play zone for kids to cool off in during the warmer months, and barbeques, which are available for the general public to use. Sports facilities include table tennis, tennis courts, netball courts, and a floodlit football pitch.
